The Lake League’s Toronto Nomads remain hot at the close of the opening month of baseball as they pick up two player of the month awards for May 2018.
Jorge “Chachi” Chavarria was named Lake League Rookie of the Month after the 26-year-old third baseman showed he’s got some skill at the plate, going .323 with a pair of homers and 13 RBIs through the month. Chachi came to the Nomads in a trade with Arizona last season, and was sent to AAA Brampton, where he provided solid numbers on the way to a Longhorns Cow League championship. Stuart Madden, who took the Seattle Salts to the playoffs last year with an AEL record-tying 63 wins, and team record attendance of 1,866,071 fans, has signed on to manage the Arizona Cowboys, following the departure of Kevin Norris.
Madden’s tenure with the Salts last year was marked by his religious adherence to sabermetrics, the advanced analysis of player statistics and trends. The Arizona Cowboys will welcome veteran free agent slugger Barry ‘The Hulk’ Janmaat to their batting order for next season after signing him to a one-year deal worth $990,000.
The Hulk had most recently been signed to the Jacksonville Ravens, who signed him to a one-year, $4.9 million deal last December, but he only made it through 18 games before rupturing his MCL on June 1, and missing out on the rest of the season.
