NZL Awards Player of the Week to Matsumoto

Asato Matsumoto of the Christchurch Christians might have lost a step over the years, but the 36-year-old right fielder can still get it done. He beat out several other worthy New Zealand League hitters over this past week to claim the Player of the Week Award.

Matsumoto posted a .409 batting average with 2 home runs and 3 RBIs last week while scoring 7 runs. For the week he was 9 for 22.

Currently Matsumoto has 7 home runs and a .323 batting average.

Gamgee Red-Hot, NZL Player of the Week

It can be difficult for a young player to step out of the shadows and assert himself in the New Zealand League, but last week Samwise Gamgee of the Invercargill Hobbits reminded everyone just why he’s here as he threw up numbers that made him an easy selection for Player of the Week. Gamgee rocked opposing pitching for a .400 average (6-for-15), 2 home runs and 4 RBIs to come away with the award.

This year Gamgee has hit 3 home runs and posted a .270 batting average.

NZL Announces Player of the Week

It’s a week that 26-year-old Chris Lemmons sent shock waves through Bull Oceanic League, with an eye-popping performance that brought him the New Zealand League Player of the Week Award.

A newcomer to the league, Lemmons made the establishment sit up and take notice, punishing opposing pitchers with a .467 average, 14 hits in 30 at-bats, 1 home run and 6 runs batted in.

Where the Invercargill Hobbits catcher goes from here, only the baseball gods know for sure, but Lemmons certainly made his mark last week.

This year Lemmons has collected a .453 batting average to date with 24 hits in 53 at-bats, 11 RBIs, 2 home runs and scored 5 times. He has played in 13 games.

NZL Names Top Player of the Week

James Adderley demonstrated his potential to be a star in the game last week and today he took home the New Zealand League Player of the Week Award.

The Auckland first baseman wreaked havoc on opposing pitchers last week, pounding them for a .524 average (11-for-21) with 1 home run and 2 RBIs on his way to claiming the honor.

In 15 games this season Adderley is batting .278 with 15 hits and 1 home run. He has scored 2 runs and driven in 3.
