The UCLA Bruins are commanding the NCAA Division I power rankings for the third straight week as the Bull League’s only exclusively American affiliated college league enters its all-star break.
The Bruins still retain their commanding gap over the Indiana Hoosiers, the USC Trojans, and the Ohio State Buckeyes, who lag far behind the 20-6 Bruins.
The team has enjoyed not only strong pitching, but incredible hitting, from the likes of Carl Simms Jr. and Brian Sarvis.
After starting the week off with a loss against Arizona State to split their series, the Bruins were blanked 18-0 in Kentucky, leaving some to wonder if the wild, high flying Bruins had finally been tamed. But they fought back against the Wildcats with am 8-2 win to split that series, before sweeping the Washington State Cougars to end the week.
Simms Jr will be joined by closer Jessie Mathies in the NCAA All-Star Game which takes place later today.
DUCKS, FIGHTING IRISH PLAYERS NAMED TOPS THIS WEEK
The Players of the Week have been announced for this week, and least surprising will be Frank Borkowski, the 20-year-old first baseman for Notre Dame Fighting Irish. “The Tank” hit .500 this week with a trio of home runs, 8 RBIs and 6 runs scored. His season average of .364 is second on the team, and his total of 10 home runs leads his teammates.
The other star this week is left fielder Ben Warren of the Oregon Ducks, who hit an incredible .630 (13-for-20) over the course of the past week. His 3 homers and 13 RBIs bring his season totals up to 9 and 28 respectively.
