Top 5: “Five-Tools” Players

The holy grail of player scouting and development is for a team to find a player that has to so-called “five tools” – that is, they can hit, hit for power, run, throw and field.

Many players have one, two, or three of these tools and can sometimes make passable use of the other tools to a lesser degree. Where they lack some of those five tools, teams can often make adjustments and use roster management to make up for the deficiency. Continue reading “Top 5: “Five-Tools” Players”

Rodriguez, Chinchilla Hit Milestones in Wins, Homers

Thirteen-time all-star Angelo Rodriguez of the Minneapolis Ravens has hit a career milestone worth celebrating, as he registered career win #150 tonight against the Louisville Sluggers, after holding them to just a single run as the Ravens took the game 16-1.

Angelo Rodriguez, a 13-time all-star, notched his record-setting 150th win tonight

“A-Rod” allowed the Sluggers just 2 hits and 2 walks, while striking out just 1 batter in 4.1 innings during an extended relief appearance.  Alejandro Dominguez had the start, and threw 4.2 innings of shutout ball before leaving in the 5th inning with mild calf strain. Week #12: Ravens Take Over From Speeders

The Minneapolis Ravens have displaced the Nevada Speeders from the top of the Weekly Team Power Rankings, after a 5-1 run that saw them topple Chicago 2-1 on the road, and take the first three in Toronto against the Nomads. They close out their four-game set with Toronto tonight and will try for the sweep.

The Speeders fell when they dropped their first two of three against Seattle to start the week off. They then went 2-1 against Calgary, with their fourth game going ahead tonight.

Garth Goyle was selected as the LL player of the week. The Ohio Oxen first baseman, who many fans are wondering whether he will still be with the club next year as he is in his walk year of his contract, went 9-for-25 with 6 of those hits going for home runs. He drove in 10 runs and scored 6 times on the week. Goyle leads the team with 25 home runs on the year, and 50 RBIs.

Meanwhile, hot-hitting Xavier de Soto of the Miami Storm was chosen as the AEL’s player of the week.  De Soto, who hit for the cycle back in July, and was also named player of the week at the end of May, earned his 4th player of the week after batting .467 with a pair of homers and 7 RBIs. He was flirting with .400 most of the season, and leads the AEL in batting with a .387 average right now. De Soto has found some surprising power this year, not seen before. He is sitting at 17 home runs on the year, after not having hit double-digit homers since 2010.

End of Year Luxury Tax Bill Looms for Some Teams

The Rimouski Fighting Moose topped the league in payroll spending, at over $191 million this year

At least four teams face the prospect of a luxury tax bill this season after overspending on payroll this year.  The top spender, at over $191 million, were the small-market, small-budget Rimouski Fighting Moose, putting them well above the estimated average payroll of $120 milion, on which the soft cap and luxury tax is based. Three other teams overspent and will face similar hardship this October.

Former GM Bob Weinberg went full “drunken sailor” last off-season, adding Dao-zi Ling, William Febres, Kyle Cahill, Celestino Caparica and Lou Bricknell, adding over $65 million to their payroll. The team was already stocked with high-priced contracts for stars like Alan Isimo, Zenjiro Suga and others. Continue reading “End of Year Luxury Tax Bill Looms for Some Teams”
