Goyle Lands 1,000th Hit

Ohio 1B Goyle collected hit #1000 tonight in a losing effort in Louisville

Ohio Oxen slugger Garth Goyle has reached base safely a milestone 1,000th time tonight. The 34-year-old veteran first baseman was proud of his accomplishment, coming in just his 3rd year with the Oxen. He previously played 11 seasons with the Montreal Metros, where he earned 790 of those hits.

But, he said later, getting #1000 for the Oxen was a special moment for him. But it was bittersweet, as the Oxen fell to the Louisville Sluggers, 5-1. Continue reading “Goyle Lands 1,000th Hit”

Groeneveld Tallies 3 Taters in Boston Win Over Louisville

Boston slugger Guido Groeneveld put three over the fence today against Louisville, tying a club record

Boston Brawlers slugger Guido Groeneveld went yard three times today against the Louisville Sluggers, tying a club record for home runs in a regular season game that was last reached in 2008 by outfielder Bill Flores.

The 36-year-old sits at 4th on the all-time career home run leaderboard among catchers in the Bull League with 224 homers, and needs just three more to surpass Eric Tessier, the former Toronto Ducks backstop.

The Sluggers hung on to dominate the game, however, winning 14-7, and taking a series lead of 2-1. The series closer takes place tomorrow in Louisville.

Top 4 Teams with Older AAA Rosters

There are a number of Bull League organizations who have an active roster average age that is lower than their top minor league team’s, indicating that their best AAA-level players could be past their prime, as they have not been called up to the league’s top level ahead of the younger players in their franchise.

While occasionally a high-level minor league team will feature some older, experienced veterans looking to refine some skills, or perhaps rehab following an injury, it is rare that the oldest and most experienced ball players in an organization will be passed over for promotion to the top level in favor of younger talent. Kimura Out For Year with Blown Achilles

The Louisville Sluggers had been assembling a dangerous team this past off-season, and looked poised to be ahead of the pack come the 2018 playoffs. But all of that has been cast into some doubt when it was learned that first baseman Setsuo Kimura would miss the entire year with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

Kimura was a risky free agent signing back in December, a 38-year-old hard-swinging slugger who has consistently produced long balls for years, and has a .296 career average coupled with a .903 career OPS. Continue reading “Kimura Out For Year with Blown Achilles”
