Lake League July Player Awards Announced

The Lake League has announced their July player awards, and the Rimouski Fighting Moose have come out strong, with Nick Seer (pictured) taking both the Rookie of the Month and Pitcher of the Month nods, and veteran shortstop Joe Street completing the team’s sweep of the month’s awards by getting the Batter of the Month Award.

The 36-year-old Street had a stellar month, going .304 with 5 of his season’s 8 homers coming in July. Street, who was an MVP back in 2007, is in the final year of his contract with Rimouski, has a career .254 average and is closing in on 250 career home runs — he’s just 3 short as of today.

Pitchers of the Month Announced for AEL and LL

Yoshiaki Fujimara of the Montreal Metros and Willie Salazar of the Denver Highlanders have been named as pitchers of the month for August, for the Lake League and American Eagle League.

It is no coincidence that both teams were the first in their leagues to clinch playoff spots, helped in both cases by solid pitching.

Fujimara went 6-0 in August, with 2.23 ERA on the month. His season record stands at 12-2, and remains a strong contender for the LL Sandy Koufax Award this year.

Salazar only dropped one of six decisions in August, holding opposing teams to just 1.85 earned runs per nine innings of baseball, and notching 52 strike outs over 48.2 innings. He is 7-4 on the season with a personal best 2.67 ERA.
