2018 Bull Cup Preview: St. Petersburg Admirals vs Montreal Metros

(Game date: Sep 23, 2018) — The St. Petersburg Admirals have finally made a return appearance in the Bull Cup Championship Series, their first in 16 seasons. They will face off against the Montreal Metros in an exciting final, deciding round to the postseason for 2018.

The Admirals were last in the Bull Cup in 2002, when they were known as the San Diego Seagulls. They have never won the Bull League’s top prize, the team has produced solid players for many years, including Hall of Famer Always “Al” Rosy, a third baseman inducted in 2016, who had back-to-back MVP seasons with San Diego, in 1996 and 1997, and was a Rookie of the Year just two years prior to that. The Speeders had sailed into the playoffs after an absence of six seasons looking like the favorite to move on to a Bull Cup, but found themselves quickly in a quagmire with solid Denver pitching from Rich Ojeda, and Game #4 star Willie Morales. The Danger bats tallied up hits and kept the first two games close, earning a series split as they won Game #1, 4-3, then dropped Game #2, 2-0. 2018 Series Preview: St. Petersburg Admirals vs Seattle Salts

(Game date: Sep. 8, 2018)

In a naval battle for the ages, a coast-to-coast series between the Seattle Salts and the St. Pete’s Admirals is about to set sail for the Elimination Round of the 2018 postseason.  And the Admirals appear to be listing to port badly, having lost two of their top pitchers, 2017 Sandy Koufax Award and rookie of the year winner Jose Soto, and a top pitching prospect, Chris Zerkle, both of whom will likely miss all of the playoffs with late season injuries.

Soto was the boy wonder from last year who started his big-league career with a 15-game win streak, finishing 2017 undefeated and easily taking the Koufax and the rookie awards. This season, he looked very much like a Triple Crown threat most of the year, going 11-4, with a 3.63 ERA and setting a team record for K’s with 190, just 5 short of tying the Bull League record. Soto strained a triceps on August 23, dashing his hopes of correcting a mediocre 2017 postseason. Continue reading “2018 Series Preview: St. Petersburg Admirals vs Seattle Salts”
