The Pitcher of the Month and the Batter of the Month in the Florida Rookie League (FRL) have been announced for February, and one of them comes as no surprise to anyone watching the up and comers from the Sunshine state.
Justin Cusimano (1B, New York) has once again captured the Batter of the Month honors, making two months in a row for the young future star. Through 22 games in February, Cusimano hit .382, scoring 17 runs, 9 home runs, 24 RBIs, and striking out just 12 times in 76 at bats.
The talented batter has spent most of his time in the designated-hitter role, where many first basemen often find themselves. As a result, we haven’t seen much of his fielding ability, but he has shown time and time again he can swing a bat. He currently leads the FRL in home runs with 18.
Meanwhile, Edgar “King Kong” Vazquez (Ohio) has found himself named Pitcher of the Month for February. The 20 year old went 5-0 and posted an ERA of 1.21, while gathering 46 K’s in 44.2 IP. Among his stellar outings during the month, Vazquez no-hit the Kingston Cannons B squad back on February 11. The parent club has such confidence in the young arm that he was promoted to Short Season A at the end of February, and he can now rest easy until June when that minor league gets underway.
