The Clearwater Sluggers (Louisville) bashed their way to the top of the Florida Rookie League’s Weekly Team Power Rankings after demolishing the Tampa Fighting Moose and the Lakeland Salts in back-to-back series sweeps. The Sluggers improve to 9-3 to take command of the Gulf Coast League’s Chris Felix Division.
But it was the Ft. Myers Deputies (Dallas) first baseman, Chris Baer, who was named the GCL’s Player of the Week, following a 12-for-21 run since last Monday that included 5 home runs, and 14 RBIs. Baer is batting .442 so far this season for the Deps, and the club sits just one game behind the Sluggers in the division standings with an 8-4 record.
On the Atlantic side of the state, the POTW was named as Brian Squarebriggs, a hard slugging center fielder from Metchosin, British Columbia. The speedy 21-year-old was drafted by Ohio last year in the 12th round after completing a season with Danbury Central College, where he was a defensive award winner despite struggling at the plate. The Oxen placed him on the Key Largo Oxen roster this spring for the FRL season after he spent 34 games in Bull Oceanic Winter League playing for Australia’s Newcastle Nuclears.
