The California Tidals have come to terms with the Montreal Metros on a trade deal that will see veteran 1B David Chinchilla go to Montreal in return for outfielder John Moles and RF Naoaki Sato.
The move equips Montreal with a veteran power bat for the lineup, as Chinchilla will likely slot in the cleanup spot in the order after the departure of 3B Hoshi Mizuguchi to free agency created a gap to fill.
Mizu had 20 homers and 69 RBIs last year to lead the team. But the addition of Chinchilla, along with catcher Bill Sarauer who also signed on as a free agent this month, replaces those home runs and RBIs.
For the Tidals, who are rebuilding, Moles brings a solid defensive glove and speed on the bases, very much a solid offensive player as well with a career .297 average, and experience in the AEL, where he played for nine seasons with Nevada.
To sweeten the deal, Montreal also gave up Sato, who spent 2017 with the Kobe Tech Bloodmutts in the PRCL, where he smashed 12 homers and put up an OPS of .848. Sato is projected to develop into a solid defensive player, who could easily break into the major level should he improve his consistency and presence at the plate.
