The red-hot Nevada Speeders are back on top of the Weekly Team Power Rankings for Week #15, as the season quickly approaches its final days. Rimouski fell to 3rd in the rankings, as the Minneapolis Ravens also benefited from a 3-1 series against the Oxen, and 2-1 series over the Louisville Sluggers.
Rotation ace Ricky Rodriguez picked up loss number 4, and his record fell to 14-4 on the season, the only mark marring an otherwise glowing week for the Ravens. The Speeders were nearly flawless, however, dropping just one game to California on Tuesday, and then sweeping Miami in four, to finish the week 6-1. The loss to the tidals was the second of that series, which began on Sunday, thus the 6-1 record doesn’t include both losses in that series split.
Chitoji Yamada, the Japanese international free agent signed by the Speeders before the season started, had another incredible week at the plate, picking up a third player of the week award this year. And what a week it was, as he went 11-for-23 with 4 homers, 12 RBIs, including a walk-off 3-run shot against Miami. His season average is still over .300, and he has now tallied 34 home runs this season.
The Lake League named Rimouski’s Carlos Mendoza as their player of the week. He batted .474 through the last 5 games. He also had 4 homers, along with 7 RBIs and 6 runs scored. The 35-year-old Mendoza, a 5-time all-star and 5-time Platinum Glove winner, is a free agent after this season. He has a career .298 average, and is one of the few true five-tools players in the game — and even at his age is still considered a threat to steal, hit and hit for power.
