(GAME DATE — July 25, 2020) — With the July 31 trade deadline fast approaching, the Admirals and the Deputies finalized a deal this afternoon. St. Petersburg has traded for 28-year-old C “Disco” Stu Wakeham and in return Dallas will receive 29-year-old minor league 2B Jon Martinez.
This year Martinez has hit at a .125 pace and produced 1 RBIs, no home runs and scored 1 run. Dallas will likely put the 29-year-old to work straight away to test his capabilities with that team. He has batted .221 in 7 seasons with St. Pete’s, and has had several spells in the minors to work on mechanics and timing.
This season Wakeham is hitting at a .306 pace with 6 home runs, 34 RBIs and has scored 33 times. Wakeham fills a hole in the Admirals lineup left by Bill Clark, who is out with an ankle sprain for another month at the very least. The club had been relying on backup backstop Doug Youso, but so far in 9 games he is hitting just .194, and his fielding has left the team scrambling as well with just 1 runner caught stealing, and a 6.08 CERA.
