Martel Shuts Out Pittsburgh

(GAME DATE — May 15, 2020) — The Pittsburgh Iron Pigs had no answer today for Montreal Metros pitcher Judson Martel. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 4-0. Pittsburgh managed only 2 hits off Martel, who had 8 strikeouts.

The extraordinarily popular Martel got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.

“Metros fans are the best fans, in my opinion,” Martel told media later. “It’s a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible.”

In 9 starts this season Martel, who has won the Sandy Koufax Award twice, has gathered 4 wins while suffering 3 losses. He has pitched 63 innings, allowed 45 hits, struck out 52 and has a 4.00 ERA.
