LL’s Premier Starter is Medina

(GAME DATE — August 1, 2020) — In July, when the name of Ruben Medina appeared on the Toronto lineup card it was a virtual lock on a victory. He started 5 times and chalked up 4 wins and no losses. With those stats it was also a virtual lock that he would be named the Lake League Pitcher of the Month.

Medina shackled opposing batters on 33 base hits and a .219 batting average. He rang up 20 strikeouts in 42.1 innings of work, surrendered 8 walks and fashioned a sparkling 2.55 ERA.

This season Medina has 10 wins and 5 losses and a 4.58 ERA. He is only the second Toronto pitcher to reach the 10-wins mark this year, the other being Nomads ace Knuckles Malone.

This Pitcher of the Month trophy is Medina’s first career player award of note after six seasons of play. A waiver pick up from Arizona in 2018, he has been a gem in the back of the Toronto rotation, and recently got promoted a slot when his unrelated colleague, Alex Medina, went out with an injury.

Medina has also picked up his second and third career shutouts with Toronto earlier this season.
