The Lake League has announced its June player awards, recognizing the top batter, pitcher and rookie during the month.
LL BATTER OF THE MONTH (JUNE 2017)
Veteran first baseman Zenjiro Suga, of the Rimouski Fighting Moose, was named the LL’s top hitter for June after belting 9 homers, sending in 25 runs, and batting .349. The 37-year-old is showing no signs of slowing down as an offensive force, and he’s hitting numbers not seen since his 2009 season, when he hit .319 and sent in 27 homers — a number he is on pace to beat this season.
The three-time MVP is currently leading the team in batting average, doubles, homers, and RBI.
LL PITCHER OF THE MONTH (JUNE 2017)
New York’s Fred Loveless could finally be experiencing his break-out year if his June numbers are anything to go by. During the past month he was 5-0 with an ERA of 0.74, and chalked up 35 strikeouts in 36.1 innings. He started the month off in the AEL with Anchorage, but was traded to New York in a complex deal that saw 8 other players move around between the two teams.
LL ROOKIE OF THE MONTH (JUNE 2017)
The top rookie for the month of June was without a doubt Jason Nelson (CF) of the Battle Creek Attack. Nelson bashed in 8 homers and drove in 17 runs while averaging .235. The young, easy going 2015 draftee, who was recently named the #60 prospect in the league, keeps his goals set high and pushes himself every day. Without a doubt we will see more of Nelson in the near future.
