Veterans CF Billy Leyva and P Carlos Beltran will be joining the Chicoutimi CInquantes for 2017, it was announced last week.
Leyva joined the Calgary Inferno as an international signing out of Puerto Rico back in 2005, working his way up through their minor league organization before debuting in the Bull League in 2012. He was part of the Inferno’s 2015 championship season, leading the American Eagle League in steals that season (24).
Last season, he won the AEL’s Platinum Glove Award at CF and was the Elimination Round MVP as Calgary attempted a repeat of their 2015 playoff achievements. Though they lost to Ohio in the Bull Cup final round, they had a remarkable year and Leyva helped Calgary take that series to the full five games.
Leyva signed to a seven year, $49.46 million deal that should help ensure Chicoutimi a good shot at a playoff position in the next few seasons.
Carlos Beltran comes to the Cinquantes in a 1 year, $2.4 million deal. The 36 year old right-hander has a career record of 85-69, and a career ERA of 4.20, having played most of his years with a strong New York Minutemen club, before joining Calgary in 2015 for their championship run, then playing for Montreal last year. Beltran is on track to hit his 1,000 career strikeout this year.
The moves step up the level of competition in the Lake League’s East Division, which also contains tough competitive teams like the Boston Brawlers, and Montreal Metros, both of whom have been busy during this off-season with top name signings.
