There was lots of activity on the opening day of Bull Oceanic League Winter Meetings, with a trade and two major free agent signings kicking things off. We give the run-down for Day 1 here:
Christchurch-Sydney Trade: Cantu for Cooper
The Christchurch Christians swapped 26-year-old C Alex Cantu for 30-year-old 2B Zach Cooper and 20-year-old SS Paddy Cook of the Sailors after what Sydney officials would only characterize as “difficult” negotiations.

$210,000 Lands RP Zimmerman for Dukes
Wellington Duke announced the signing of Brian Zimmerman to the cheers of fans and local sportswriters alike today.
The 26-year-old will cash checks for $210,000 a year for 1 year, and will certainly enhance the club’s playoff chances if he keeps up the caliber of play he’s capable of.
Zimmerman has no pro baseball experience and was an amateur free agent.
Hamilton Inks Star 2B to $1,050,000 Deal
Fans in Hamilton ushered in Tim Collins today as their new second baseman. The 32-year-old came to terms with the Hamilton Hammers and will be hauling in $350,000 a year over 3 years.
