The euphoria surrounding a big name deal can sometimes overshadow the deal itself. Occasionally a team will mortgage its future to make a big splash, though no one in California was worried about that today as the club finalized terms with Yeong-suk Yi.
Yi will earn $9,400,000 per year over 1 year. He becomes the fifth highest paid relief pitcher in the Bull League, after Jacksonville’s Micah Jones ($25 million), Dallas’ Jon Courteau ($12.1m), Montreal’s Jordan Delgado ($10.6m), and Chicago’s Ming Ou ($10m).
Yi is also the fifth highest paid pitcher under 30 years of age, though he will turn 30 during the 2017 season.
Lifetime Yi has put up a 21-and-12 record with 30 saves and a 3.24 ERA. Last year, he averaged nearly 13 strikeouts per nine innings, and had his lowest WHIP of his career at 1.15.
