(GAME DATE — May 26 2020) — It’s not something you read about in the sports pages every day — a 5-for-5 day. For many, it might come around only once in a career — and for Les “The General” Groves, it came around today.
The 29-year-old catcher scattered hits all over GTAGunSafety.com Stadium to pace the Milwaukee Hops to a 6-4 victory over the Toronto Nomads.
Toronto skipper Matt Hall told reporters in the press room that “Groves deserves a hat-tip.”
“He hit some good pitches against us,” he said. “In fact, according to our scouting reports, Groves hit several that he is not supposed to be able to hit.”
Les Groves singled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI single in the 9th.
So far this season the 29-year-old catcher, who was drafted in 2017 out of the now-defunct Bull Oceanic League, is batting .348 with 7 home runs, 25 RBIs and 28 runs scored. He has 56 hits in 161 at-bats, 24 walks and a .440 OBP, in 44 games.
Last year’s Carl Simms MVP Award winner is on pace to have another great year, but with stiffer competition in the form of John Rambo, Grove may be an outside shot at a repeat MVP performance.
