The inaugural season of the Florida Rookie League, the winter rookie level developmental league for the Bull League, has come to a close, and the first champions are the Miami-based Chicoutimi Cinquantes B team.
The final showdown to name the championship team saw the Cinq’s rookies face off against the Fort Myers Dallas Lawmen B, the FRL affiliate to the Dallas Deputies (which was formerly the Dallas Lawmen).
Game 1 of the best-of-3 final was on Friday, and saw the underdog Chicoutimi team win 3-1, scoring all of their runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. The Cinq’s were down 1-0 to Dallas, who had moved into their narrow lead on a first-pitch solo shot from 19-year-old RF Yang Yin. With a man on 1st following a lead-off walk, CF Kenny Keeling, advancing the runner to third on the infield hit. Then, 3B Victor Maysonet drove a hard single down the third base line, scoring lead-off hitter 1B Jim McFarlen.
With runners at first and second, and 1 out, RF Joe Mackey hit a sac fly to right-center, allowing Keeling to score from third. Then C Edwin Marte singled to right field scoring Maysonet for run number 3.
The pitcher’s duel resumed and Chicoutimi took the win at home.
Then, yesterday in game 2, with the Cinq’s visiting the Fort Myers-based Dallas team, they stepped on the gas and didn’t let up, scoring 8 runs before finally being answered in the bottom of the 6th with 2 runs from Dallas, and another 2 from them in the 8th. But it would not be enough, and Chicoutimi closed the deal 8-4 on an 11-hit effort.
