York Lions win CIS Championships

York University has won the inaugural Bull League CIS (Canadian Intercollegiate Sports) college championships, defeating Dalhousie University in a 2-0 sweep of the best-of-three finals.

The Lions opened the series with a 2-0 shutout in game 1, with Fred Hutchinson delivering a commanding performance from the mound for the north Toronto university, pitching 5.2 innings and only allowing one hit, and two walks.

Center fielder Bob Lundy and catcher John Redden teamed up for the Lions’ only runs, with Lundy going 4-for-4 and improving his playoff average to .500. Dal’s Frank Harding, who was 2-1 on the season, with an ERA of 0.78, ate the loss for the Tigers.

Then, in game 2, it was the Tigers who opened scoring, with a pair of runs in each of the first two innings. Then York answered in the 5th, tying the game in what could only be described as a train wreck for Dal, who otherwise provided solid defense through the game.

Lundy was named series MVP for York.
