Buc’s outfielder Reed Salsman was named player of the game in an exciting series sweep finish over Spokane that sees the Anchorage Aces’ AA-level affiliate team move to the Heifer Cup finals.
Salsman came through big for the Savannah side yesterday, going 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs, including what would turn out to be the game winner in the 7th inning. Tamon Yamaguchi came in to mop up in the seventh and ended up with the win decision.
The Spokane North Stars never got off the ground during the series, despite putting up some of the best hitting and defense at the AA level during the regular season. The Jacksonville affiliate put Bob Carriere on the mound for Game 3, and he was shelled for 5 runs in 4.1 innings, after going 6-2 on the season and holding a respectable 3.17 ERA. It was a bitter disappointment for the Toronto native, who was a 1st round pick in the 2013 draft, but who has since then languished in the minors. This season was Carriere’s fourth at the AA level.
The Buccaneers will play either the Nashville Misfits (Battle Creek), or the Anchorage Sky Chiefs (Chicago), who are currently tied in their best-of-five series with 2 games a piece. Those two will go at it again for game five tomorrow in Anchorage.
