(GAME DATE — August 1, 2020) — The United States will avoid the wrath of manager Troy Vogel and they have a championship trophy to boot.
The United States defeated Australia today by the final score of 4-2 in the championship game of the 2020 Summer College Tournament, sending overjoyed players and fans streaming onto the field.
“I tried to make sure all the guys knew I would be furious if we screwed this up,” Vogel joked after the game. “I guess that was enough motivation for them.”
It was a first gold medal for Team USA, who won silver at last year’s installment of the tournament. Arizona State’s Jackson Purcell was a huge factor in the final game, hitting a 6th inning 3-run homer that helped break a scoreless deadlock.
