(GAME DATE — June 1, 2020) – When you think of rookies, you think of men in their early to mid-20’s. Despite the fact that Roberto Gutierrez is 30, he made a big splash by putting up solid numbers to win Metropolitan League Rookie of the Month honors.
He told BNN reporters at the press conference, “I’m thrilled beyond words. All I can say is… better late than never.”
In May, the Washington first baseman hit .398 while rapping out 37 hits, 6 home runs, 22 RBIs and 21 runs scored.
This year Gutierrez is hitting .349 with 60 hits, 11 home runs, 37 RBIs and has scored 28 runs.
Gutierrez was signed as an international free agent last December, initially on a minor league deal. He was a non-roster invitee to the Freedom spring camp, and made an impact just 2 weeks into the season when he was suspended after an ejection on April 9, following a brawl involving the Calgary Inferno.
