(GAME DATE — Sept. 1, 2020) — The LL and ML Pitcher of the Month Awards for August have been announced, and both recipients are first-time winners from playoff contending teams.
Boston Brawlers lefty Lenny Brisco picked up his hardware after the 25-year-old put up an impressive 6-0 record on the month, winning all six starts. He whiffed 41 batters over 44.1 innings, etching out a 2.03 ERA.
Indeed his 5th season playing in Beantown has been a complete turnaround for him. He began the year with a career 12-16 record. The groundballer found himself in the All-Star game in 2018, but has had difficulty finding many notable achievements until now.
Meanwhile, Jerry Long, who like Brisco was a product of the 2013 draft, was given the accolade as the ML’s besst pitcher for last month. In four starts, Long went a perfect 4-0, fanning 30 batters in 34 innings and compiling a 1.06 ERA.
The St. Petersburg Admirals starter, who mixes a dead-stick heater and a nasty curve with a pro-level slider and developing changeup, is only in his 3rd season in the bigs, having debuted for the club when they were in Anchorage in 2017, posting a 6-4 record but matching it to a forgettable 5.59 ERA.
The right-hander has since come a “Long” way, winning a Bull Cup with the Admirals last year after spending most of the season at AAA, and throwing two shutouts while completing 5 games.
